What is Study Technology?

The Science of Learning — Applied in Johannesburg

Study Technology (Study Tech) is a secular, evidence-based educational methodology developed by American author and educator L. Ron Hubbard. It is the only comprehensive system that identifies the precise causes of learning difficulties — and provides students with practical tools to overcome them.

Unlike conventional teaching methods that focus solely on curriculum delivery, Study Technology addresses the three barriers to study that prevent students from truly understanding and applying what they learn. These barriers are universal and affect learners at every level, from Grade R to Grade 12.

Applied Scholastics International (APS), headquartered in Spanish Lake, Missouri, USA, is the global licensing body for Study Technology in educational settings. Over 68 million people across 73 nations have been aided by Study Technology programmes delivered by APS-licensed organisations.

Education Alive in Johannesburg CBD is one of the few schools in South Africa formally licensed by Applied Scholastics International to deliver the complete Study Technology programme — including teacher training checksheets and the student "Learning How to Learn" programme.

Core Methodology

The Three Barriers to Study

L. Ron Hubbard identified three specific barriers that prevent any student from truly understanding and applying what they study. Education Alive teachers are trained to recognise and address all three in every lesson.

Absence of Mass

When a student studies something without having the actual object or a substitute for it present, learning becomes abstract and difficult to retain. Study Technology requires that real objects, demonstrations, or physical models be used alongside written materials.

Too Steep a Gradient

Trying to learn something before mastering the prerequisite concepts causes confusion and a feeling of overwhelm. Study Technology teaches students to identify exactly where their understanding broke down and to return to that point before proceeding.

The Misunderstood Word

A word or symbol that is not understood — or is wrongly understood — is the single most significant barrier to learning. Study Technology trains students to use a dictionary immediately when they encounter a misunderstood word, and to clear every word in a passage before moving on.

Why Education Alive?

Johannesburg's Only Fully APS-Licensed School

Many schools claim to use "study skills" programmes. Education Alive is different: we hold a formal licence from Applied Scholastics International to deliver the complete Study Technology curriculum — including the teacher training programme and the student "Learning How to Learn" course.

Our school is UMALUSI-accredited, meaning our Grade 12 learners write the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations and receive nationally recognised qualifications. We follow the standard South African CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) curriculum, enhanced by Study Technology.

Located in the Nelson Mandela Building at 37 Harrison Street, Johannesburg Central, we are easily accessible by taxi and public transport from Braamfontein, Newtown, Fordsburg, Mayfair, Soweto, and surrounding areas. We accept new students at any time of year and at any grade level.
